Amplitude - A multi-sensory Exploration of Sound and Light
ARTIST STATEMENT
darryl bedford
My artistic practice is a continuous exploration of transformation, structure, and contemporary expression through paper. Known for "Drawstring Origami"—a fusion of traditional folding and strategic kirigami—I create complex, flexible modular structures that bridge the gap between rigid engineering and fluid kinetic sculpture.
My journey began as a therapeutic endeavour, finding solace in the meditative, rhythmic nature of paperwork. As a neurodivergent person, I view my dyslexia as a creative "superpower"; it gives me a unique spatial perspective, allowing me to perceive and construct three-dimensional forms in innovative ways. My work is deeply influenced by the structural mathematics found in nature, specifically the mesmerising complexity of radiolarians—microscopic ocean beings whose ethereal essence I translate into wearable art.
Central to my practice is the interplay between flexibility and rigidity. By evolving from repeat tessellated pleating to more advanced fractal geometric techniques, I can control surfaces with precision, allowing paper to flow with the fluidity of fabric. Current practice also includes utilising photo-emulsion screen-printing processes to apply bespoke patterns to my structures.
Beyond aesthetics, my work is rooted in education and inclusivity. As an Art teacher for deaf pupils and a trauma-informed practitioner, I integrate paper engineering into my curriculum to foster sensory engagement. I am committed to sustainability, primarily using recyclable materials like Elephant Hide and Kozo paper to ensure my creations remain eco-conscious.
My goal is to push the boundaries of what paper can achieve and to highlight the transformative power of a diverse perspective.
