Nicholas Higgins
Cinematographer, Director, Editor, Lighting Design, Visual Effects
Director, Genre Productions Tasmania Ltd (t/a Paper on Skin™)
Nick studied Production and Lighting Design at WAAPA in the 1990’s. He has spent the intervening decades working freelance as a lighting designer and filmmaker. His work with BighART brought him to Tasmania.
Nick manages the film unit for North-West Support Services, a disability support services company that recognises the power of film, art and music to tell the stories of people with impairments. This led to Nick’s involvement with Paper on Skin™ when, in 2020, he was engaged as director and cinematographer when covid forced a digital pivot away from a live event to a filmed version of the competition.
Wearable artworks provide ongoing inspiration and challenge Nick to capture them as they are envisaged and created by the artists.
Clare Spillman
Stage Manager, Floor Manager, Executive Producer
Clare has worked with the Paper on Skin™ team for the 2020, 2022 and 2024 iterations. She has over 20 years of experience working as an executive producer and stage manager and is extremely skilled in dealing with a variety stakeholders and making the seemingly impossible possible.
Clare keeps the human and logistical elements of our events in order – no matter how complex, challenging and/or ‘peak-time’ a situation may be.
Collaborating closely with distinguished Tasmanian entities including Ten Days on the Island, Mudlark Theatre and BighART, Clare's career has been marked by defining roles such as Company Manager at the National Theatre of Parramatta. Clare has also worked with the only two deaf-led production companies in the UK, and has experience with all ability arts organisations and working with ethnically diverse theatre groups.

PAM THORNE
In 2011, Pam Thorne had an idea. “What about a competition for wearable paper art?” From that idea, Paper on Skin was born. With strong support from the Burnie Regional Art Gallery’s then Director, Greg Leong, the first Paper on Skin event was held – in that very gallery.
Pam grew up in Burnie during the heyday of the pulp mill. It was the biggest employer in town, bringing economic stability and a thriving sense of community to Burnie. When her youngest child, Lyndal, started school, Pam began taking art classes. After many years as a watercolourist, Pam began experimenting with paper art, creating a suite of life-size papier-mâché sculptures with her creative partner, Ruth Rees.
Pam is still deeply connected to Paper on Skin and is a Director of Genre Productions Tasmania Ltd, Paper on Skin’s parent company.
