Sunbird Warrior – Small and Mighty Hind

Sunbird Warrior - Small and Mighty Hind represents a brave little five-year-old Palestinian girl who should have grown up, whose life should have been protected, and whose last words should never have been a plea for rescue.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Kelcie Bryant-Duguid

Kelcie Bryant-Duguid is a visual artist living on Dharawal land in NSW. Themes of identity, the environment, place and belonging form her personal narrative. Her multi-disciplinary art practice is varied employing a wide range of textile applications and techniques. She utilises recycled, reclaimed, and found materials and enjoys integrating non-traditional materials using traditional textile techniques and processes in her work.

The medium is spun, woven, dyed, laminated, stitched, sculpted, knitted, and crocheted. Pushing the boundaries of paper, exploring possibilities and incorporating couture dressmaking techniques with paper applications for wearable garments feature in her work.

Throughout her art practice, Bryant-Duguid utilises the dress form to represent women. She sees it as a canvas that communicates messages, imagery, and design: and as a medium for protest. She is particularly interested in language and how it is used to shape society, politics and issues pertaining to women, social justice and the environment. The personal is political. Her wearable art garments are a medium for storytelling, allowing the wearer to assume an alternative persona or character and act as a vehicle for expression of individuality and identity. At times her garments weave idyllic, whimsical narratives grounded in the land of make-believe and pretend. Sometimes they are a message of hope and possibility, transforming the ordinary and mundane into something extraordinary and magical. Other times they adopt the voice of advocacy, exposing injustice, questioning and challenging accepted norms and narratives, amplifying the voices of those who are silenced, unseen and unheard. Bryant-Duguid’s work is represented in public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas.
