ARTIST STATEMENT

KATO KAORI

My work explores paper as a living surface that responds to time, touch, and movement. In recent years, my focus has shifted from recording memories or traces toward a more intuitive process. I am interested in the moment when people perceive beauty, whether it appears in the geometry of patterns or in the instant when regularity and irregularity meet.

Through the simple act of folding, through the gestures of the mountain and valley folds, I search for that delicate balance where structure and fluidity coexist.

Japanese possesses words that defy translation into other languages. One such term is komorebi (木漏れ日), which refers to sunlight filtering through the branches and leaves of trees. The contrast of light and colour created by this natural phenomenon continues to inspire my creative process. Through paper, I explore how light interacts with form, how rhythm emerges from repetition, and how stillness and motion can exist together in a single surface.
