ARTIST STATEMENT

Amanda May

From paper flowers to fashion accessories, Amanda May creates custom, handmade statement pieces for special events, styling, and immersive décor. Driven by a passion for bold, transformative design, she primarily works in paper, exploring how everyday materials can evoke wonder and curiosity.

With an honours degree in Fashion Design and a childhood spent crafting, Amanda’s design process balances careful engineering with creative play. Based in Naarm (Melbourne), she conceives, develops, and handcrafts each piece as a local independent designer.

Nature, the built environment, and the interplay between the two are central to her work. This fascination extends to illusions and artifice - Amanda blurs the line between real and artificial, allowing detailed studies of natural subjects alongside structures impossible in nature. Scale is key, suspending reality and playing with perception to amuse, intrigue, and delight.

Paper is her medium of choice for its lightness, malleability, and the joy of transforming a common material into something extraordinary. Many pieces are created for a single event, making paper’s recyclable nature an essential consideration.

Amanda is always looking to make her practice more sustainable, from sourcing paper manufacturers that follow responsible forest management to offsetting her personal and professional carbon footprints. Amanda avoids plastic as much as possible and is developing methods to create adhesive-free structures.
