Kajal

Kajal, as part of my ongoing project Wearing Memory, explores the tension between fragility and resilience through stitched paper threads. The piece reflects the lived experiences, restrictions, and inner strength of women, where delicate materials carry emotional weight and silent narratives.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Sepideh Abdolmohammadi

My artistic practice uses paper to explore women’s resilience, cultural memory, and untold histories. The “Bite” series is inspired by the Kurdish Khavankarritual, where women historically gather life, hope, and survival into simple bundles . Through quilling and the use of paper combined with cloves, I transform symbolic gestures—women’s quiet endurance and unvoiced protest—into delicate yet powerful wearable forms. This necklace is both a tribute to women’s silent strength and a visible testament to their unfinished struggle for justice. It embodies memory, pain, and hope in a tangible, elegant expression, giving visibility to histories often over looked. The “Bite” series is a three-piece collection that includes a quilled tableau representing the traditional “Bite” table with Kurdish scarf motifs and pomegranate, a fully paper-based sculptural bowl, and the wearable “Bite” necklace. Together, these works reinterpret Kurdish cultural rituals through contemporary paper-based visual language.
