ARTIST STATEMENT

Sally baldwin

Sally is a UK based textile artist whose practice explores themes of fragility and transience, both environmental and human. Working with stitch, collage, and moulding techniques, she creates sculptural installations, wall-based works and costumes, using delicate materials including papers, silks, and silk fibres.

Her recent series Fragile Earth evokes ghostly landscapes in white, ephemeral forms—suggesting either the remnants of a lost world or a fragile ecosystem still within our power to preserve. Supported by Arts Council England, the work has been exhibited in five solo shows across the Southwest UK and Herefordshire, as well as in a colaborative exhibition with ceramicist Nettie Sumner in Sydney in February 2026

Sally has also created works responding to fire-ravaged landscapes, including a prize-winning costume for Paper on Skin in Tasmania, which symbolised regeneration after the devastating Australian bushfires of 2019–20. Her installations have been selected for Wells Art Contemporary (2022, 2024), The John Ruskin Prize (2024, 2025) and Fiberart International in Pittsburg, USA, where her piece Disasters of War, looking at the plight of women and children in war, won the Grand Prize.  A sculpture ‘Lost Souls’ won the Women in Art Sculpture Award in September 2025.
