ARTIST STATEMENT
cynthia hawkins
My name is Shih Hawkins, commonly known as Cynthia, and I am a TasmAsian artist based in Somerset, Tasmania, where I operate my private practice, Studio 44.
For the past four years, I have dedicated myself to tutoring local youth, a role that has provided me with immense satisfaction as I watch my students excel in their creative journeys. In addition to my teaching and my role as a full-time mother, I volunteer with stARTs North-West, an organization that has supported the arts and culture on the North-West Coast ot Tasmania for 77 years.
Currently in my second year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Visual Cultures at Curtin University, I consider myself a full-time artist whose life revolves entirely around creative practice. While my work spans fine arts and sculpture, I have a deep history with wearable art. After a four-year hiatus from producing major wearable pieces, I have been experimenting extensively with new media. Through this process, I have discovered a unique material that I believe will offer a completely fresh perspective on paper garments.
I look forward to the opportunity to showcase this innovative work at Paper on Skin 2026 and to contribute to the vibrant artistic community of the North-West coast.
