Ice Labyrinth Dress & Jacket

Ice Labyrinth Dress & Jacket

Ice Labyrinth Jacket and Dress is based upon my experiences of co-creating ice labyrinths on Lake Baikal, Siberia; how the ice changes form and colour as it begins to melt, yet the memory of the labyrinth remains in the water.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Clare parry-jones

I create wearable art using abaca paper, with acrylic paint, chalks or inks. I will often make large paintings, and from this make a design for a costume that can be worn. The content will be informed by time I have spent within the particular environment, listening to stories and sounds, making research, absorbing and reflecting upon my physical experience within the landscape. I then translate these experiences and knowledge into the physical design.

I am particularly inspired by ancient sacred sites e.g. neolithic burial chambers (Bryn Celli Ddu), stone circles and avenues (Avebury) and bringing together ancient rites with modern ritual performance and creative interventions, using wearable art as part of this expression. My background is in theatre, performance and clown, which informs the theatrical elements of my wearable art and the importance of connection, both to self and the environment.

I am interested in our ancient plant life, such as birch bark: its use as a form of parchment, as a secular and sacred material. Lichen and moss inspire me in their slow and persistent growth and resilience, often upon ancient rocks and within damp forests. I enjoy the liminal spaces between elements e.g. land and water.

I bring together the sensuality of the natural world and human experience into paper art, made to be enjoyed and lived with.

I create paper costumes for my own performances and paper land art, predominantly within water environments, creating 2-D sculptures that become alive within the movement of water. These are recorded through photography and film.
